I read a short article on Mashable.com just last night and got the inspiration for this blog post. The article is titled: Every Hour of TV You Watch May Shorten Your Lifespan By 22 Minutes [STUDY]
Here is an excerpt:
A study by researchers at the University of Queensland in Australia has concluded that, for every hour of television watched after age 25, the average human lifespan drops by 22 minutes. A person who watch six hours of TV per day will, on average, live five years less than people who spent less time on the couch and in front of the television screen. Those are some scary numbers.
Then it goes on to say:
This study doesn’t prove that TV is quietly killing us. It’s more likely that lack of exercise and bad eating habits are shortening the lifespans of TV couch potatoes. A person who spends six hours a day staying active is almost certainly going to live longer than a person who likes to lean back in a recliner watching countless episodes of Judge Judy or Law and Order: SVU.
Needless to say, I have been trying to kick the TV habit for quite some time. I had better luck quitting smoking I have to say. But with a renewed focus on my business, my TV time has dramatically decreased.
So the article on Mashable gave me the inspiration to list 5 Things you can do at home instead of watching TV.
Here you go:
5 Things to do instead of watching TV
1) Exercise: many of us complain about not having enough time to exercise. It is essential to good health and yet for some it is easy to sacrifice our health for TV time.
A man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools. Unknown
2) Read: Reading helps you to become a better writer and speaker. It enriches the mind. The quote below says it well:
If we believe in Sir Richard Steele’s saying “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body”, we ought to agree that a man who says he has no time for reading is committing a sort of intellectual suicide. What he says doesn’t make more sense than the man who says, “I don’t have time to eat”
3) Clear your clutter: Clutter has many negative effects especially in your home which should be your santuary. to name a few:
– Clutter can cause stress
– Clutter can make you feel tired because of the stagnant energy around it
– Clutter in your space can lead to clutter in your mind, causing confusion and feelings or disorientation
We all know how quickly clutter can build up around us if we do not give it due attention. So use your old ‘TV’ time to clear your space.
4) Plan: Very important in life and business. Sometimes we are too busy focusing on implementation that we forget important things or do things in not the most efficient way.
Case in point: If you plan your meals for the week, grocery shopping is that much easier.
Case in point for business: If you plan your business goals for the Month or week, your day to day activities are more organized and focused.
5) Phone a friend or relative that you don’t see often: Reach out and let someone know that you are thinking about them.
These are just 5 things that you can do at home, instead of watching TV. There are many more that you can do like have a long family dinner, play a board game, catch up on chores.
There is even more you can do outdoors. I found a great article you can check out here: Stop Watching TV – 100 Fun Things to Do Instead
